Explanation: How Brain Training Can Make You Significantly Smarter

As many people hit middle age, they often start to notice that their memory and mental clarity are not what they used to be.  We suddenly can't remember where we put the keys just a moment ago, or an old acquaintance's name, or the name of an old band we used to love.  As the brain fades, we euphemistically refer to these occurrences as "senior moments."
While seemingly innocent, this loss of mental focus can potentially have a detrimental impact on our professional, social, and personal well-being.

It happens to most of us, but is it inevitable?
Neuroscientists are increasingly showing that there's actually a lot that can be done.  It turns that the brain needs exercise in much the same way our muscles do, and the right mental workouts can significantly improve our basic cognitive functions.  Thinking is essentially a process of making neural connections in the brain.  To a certain extent, our ability to excel in making the neural connections that drive intelligence is inherited.  However, because these connections are made through effort and practice, scientists believe that intelligence can expand and fluctuate according to mental effort.
Now, a new San Francisco Web-based company has taken it a step further and developed the first "brain training program" designed to actually help people improve and regain their mental sharpness.  Called Lumosity, it was designed by some of the leading experts in neuroscience and cognitive psychology from Stanford University.
Lumosity, is far more than an online place to exercise your mental skills.  That's because they have integrated these exercises into a Web-based program that allows you to systematically improve your memory and attention skills.  The program keeps track of your progress and provides detailed feedback on your performance and improvement.  Most importantly, it constantly modifies and enhances the games you play to build on the strengths you are developing--much like an effective exercise routine requires you to increase resistance and vary your muscle use.

Does it work?
Apparently it does. In randomized, controlled clinical trials, Lumosity was shown to significantly improve basic cognitive functions. One study showed students improved their scores on math tests by 34 percent after using Lumosity for six weeks, significantly greater gains than those made by other students in the same class, who were not training with the Lumosity program.
The company says its users have reported clearer and quicker thinking, improved memory for names, numbers, directions, increased alertness and awareness, elevated mood, and better concentration at work or while driving.
While many of the games at Lumosity are free, a modest subscription fee is required to use the full program over the long term.
However, Lumosity is currently offering a free trial of their program to new users so that you can see how well it works before you decide to subscribe.  The trial is completely free (no credit card required) and the company believes the results will speak for themselves.

2013's food trend predictions

What will be on the culinary catwalk this year?
Flexitarianism
Vegetarian food has grown in popularity over the past couple of years, but 2013 is the year of the 'flexitarian', a nutrition-conscious muncher who follows a mainly plant-based diet with the occasional inclusion of meat products.
Ancient grainsBye bye rice, couscous and pasta. Hello barley, millet, faro, quinoa, amaranth and spelt.
Radical restaurantsWe saw food trucks and pop-up restaurants taking over Australian cities last year and the popularity of these will continue to grow in 2013. Prepare your tastebuds for underground eateries too. Sounds secretive and scrumptious, right?

Ash
2012 was the year where everything was salted – salted caramel, salted coconut, dark chocolate with sea salt. This year, ash will be the dominant underlying food flavour. Chefs in the US are already turning veggies into charred dust and sprinkling them over their tucker.

Trans-continental combosMexican munchies will continue to thrive, while Korean, Peruvian and northern Chinese fusion fare will get a tasty look-in.

Artisan supermarketsBondi David Jones now has a posh food hall boasting an oyster bar, gelato stop and antipasto counter. Even supermarkets such as Coles are gaining recognition for their gourmet prepared meals such as sushi, pizza and curries.

Heirloom chickenAccording to US food experts, we'll soon start calling chooks by their specific varieties and identifying how each one constrasts in flavour.

Back to basicsWeber Shandwick's food trend report claims that vegetables will be the focal point of any Aussie meal throughout 2013, but suggests that "we may even see a rise of edible insects like grasshoppers and locusts". Eeek!

ChardonnayThis grape has been out of favour for some time, but will make a yummy comeback to wine glasses in 2013. Sweet wines and boutique beers may also thrive. Read how chardonnay is back with a vin-geance here.

Family feastsThanks to chefs such as Jamie Oliver, this year will be all about sitting down together and tucking into shared banquets – think slow-cooked lamb, duck lettuce cups or a wild mushroom risotto thrown into the middle of the table for everyone to dive into.
Online shoppingTechnology is taking over everything else, so why not grocery shopping? The main supermarkets and local gourmet delis and health stores will be going fully dig-eat-al in 2013.
Mini-meals for kidsThis year, it's out with the chicken nuggets and burgers in a bid to fight child obesity. We'll start serving up smaller portions of what we eat for our kids, developing their palates and encouraging healthier eating.

New Movies In Theaters

Opening This Week - September 20

Prisoners (2013)
Certificate R 153 min   -   Crime | Drama | Thriller

Metascore: 73/100 (43 reviews)
When Keller Dover's daughter and her friend go missing, he takes matters into his own hands as the police pursue multiple leads and the pressure mounts. But just how far will this desperate father go to protect his family?
Director: Denis Villeneuve
Stars: Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Viola Davis, Melissa Leo

THE BUZZ: Zodiac spotlighted Jake Gyllenhaal as a nascent detective, and it was one of his finest roles to date. He also nailed the buddy-cop relationship in End of Watch, so I'm excited to see him as a cocky detective going up against a frantic Hugh Jackman in this Black List script by Aaron Guzikowski, who wrote Contraband. The young screenwriter's project sat in the laps of several directors (including Bryan Singer and Antoine Fuqua) before Denis Villeneuve came aboard to direct his follow-up to the excellent, Oscar-nominated Incendies. Given the cast's pedigree, the director's cache, and the adult-skewing subject matter, we think this is a true awards candidate in the Warner Bros. 2013 roster.

Battle of the Year (2013)
Certificate PG-13 109 min   -   Music

Metascore: 27/100 (16 reviews)
Battle of the Year attracts all the best teams from around the world, but the Americans haven't won in fifteen years. Dante enlists Blake to assemble a team of the best dancers and bring the Trophy back to America where it started.
Director: Benson Lee
Stars: Josh Holloway, Laz Alonso, Josh Peck, Caity Lotz

THE BUZZ: Chris Brown might not put his past with Rihanna behind him in the indefinite future, but unlike, say, Mel Gibson, he's managed to find success despite a tarnished public image. Here, he teams up with Josh Peck for director Benson Lee, who is turning his documentary into a feature for Screen Gems, who haven't put out a dance movie since Stomp the Yard, surprisingly. I'll make a large-popcorn bet that Brown's character redeems himself during the course of this battle.

Enough Said (2013) - [Limited]
Certificate PG-13 93 min   -   Comedy

Metascore: 76/100 (26 reviews)
A divorced woman who decides to pursue the man she's interested in learns he's her new friend's ex-husband.
Director: Nicole Holofcener
Stars: Julia Louis-Dreyfus, James Gandolfini, Catherine Keener, Toni Collette

THE BUZZ: Though this movie will forever be remembered as one of James Gandolfini's last big-screen appearances, it's cool to know that Nicole Holofcener wanted to work with him earlier on in her (and his) career. Having him paired with Julia Louis-Dreyfus is one of the highest final honors imaginable, and we're looking forward to how this duo translates Holofcener's reliable perspective on romance, aging, what have you.

C.O.G. (2013) - [Limited]
Certificate R 88 min   -   Comedy | Drama

Metascore: 59/100 (14 reviews)
A cocky young man travels to Oregon to work on an apple farm. Out of his element, he finds his lifestyle and notions being picked apart by everyone who crosses his path.
Director: Kyle Patrick Alvarez
Stars: Jonathan Groff, Denis O'Hare, Corey Stoll, Dean Stockwell

THE BUZZ: Adapting a David Sedaris story for the big screen is both an honor and a daunting task -- we're unsure if a film can even come close to matching his written tone effectively -- but director/adapter Kyle Patrick Alvarez has laid the foundation here, and reportedly there are fine performances from star Jonathan Groff, the oddly sexy Corey Stoll from "House of Cards", the reliable Denis O'Hare and Dale Rickey, and what's said to be a surprising and subdued turn from former "SNL" player Casey Wilson.

A Single Shot (2013) - [Limited]
Certificate R 116 min   -   Crime | Drama | Thriller

Metascore: 53/100 (16 reviews)
The tragic death of a beautiful young girl starts a tense and atmospheric game of cat and mouse between hunter John Moon and the hardened backwater criminals out for his blood.
Director: David M. Rosenthal
Stars: Sam Rockwell, Jeffrey Wright, Kelly Reilly, Jason Isaacs

THE BUZZ: We'll watch Sam Rockwell in anything (seriously, put on Gentlemen Broncos again and we'll deal with it) so it doesn't matter if we think we've seen plenty of similar plots in the past, we just want to watch Rockwell lead the way -- even if it's into dangerous yet familiar territory.

Rush (2013) - [Los Angeles/New York City]
Certificate R 123 min   -   Action | Biography | Drama | Sport

Metascore: 73/100 (25 reviews)
A re-creation of the merciless 1970s rivalry between Formula One rivals James Hunt and Niki Lauda.
Director: Ron Howard
Stars: Daniel Brühl, Chris Hemsworth, Olivia Wilde, Alexandra Maria Lara

THE BUZZ: Senna made the real world of Formula 1 racing one of the best documentaries in recent history. Will a dramatized version of champion rider Niki Lauda's obsessive competitive streak register with a wide audience? Well, with Ron Howard directing, we can't help but think this will be the safest race around. The upshot: Daniel Brühl's first starring role in the States.

Liam Hemsworth Moves On From Miley With Eiza González – What’s Hot and What’s Trending 20 September 2013

Liam Hemsworth Moves On From Miley With Eiza González – the Hunger Games actor seems to have wasted no time in moving on after his split from fiancée Miley Cyrus was confirmed earlier this week.

Liam had previously been spotted with 23-year old Latino actress Eiza González in Las Vegas a few days ago but at that time it was assumed that he and Miley were still an item,

This time around things looked very different as not only had Liam and Miley announced they were no longer together but also Liam and Eiza looked to be getting on very well indeed and were seemingly not too worried who saw them together.

Liam was spotted dropping off a suitcase at Eiza’s apartment in Beverly Hills and pretty soon after his arrival the pair were spotted having a passionate kiss with little doubt that they were more than just friends as Liam’s hand strayed down to rest on Eiza’s pert bottom.

Liam was said to have finally given up hope of a reconciliation with Miley after her controversial appearance at the MTV VTAs when it was made clear that she saw her career moving in a very different direction from her start with Disney.

Straight after being spotted getting up close and personal with Liam, Eiza was asked to talk about the new relationship at a press conference being held for her new animated movie Los Croods. As you might have guessed the Mexican actress’s response to this line of questioning was: ‘I have nothing to say about that subject.’

Although she is well-known in her home country of Mexico Eiza is less well-known in the US or perhaps we should now say “was”  less well-known in the US.

The actress only made the move to LA a few weeks ago but has already got herself a role in the new Adrian Cervantes movie “All Hail The Squash Blossom Queen.”

Best Tech 2013: Coolest new gadgets we want this month

1. September 2013: Withings Pulse

Yes, another digital trainer, but this addition to the sports-pimp plastic mountain has new tricks up its sleeve. It’s the smallest device – just 8g – that can tell you your heart rate as well your steps, calories burned, how well you’re sleeping, and all that; just do your workout, press your finger to the back and find out whether all that cardio’s paying off. Clipping discreetly to your clothing and Bluetoothing to your phone and the free Withings Health Mate app, it allows you to chart progress and personal bests, with 14 days worth of data accessible via an OLED screen.

2. September 2013: Bayan Audio Soundbook

British fi rm Bayan drops in on the busy Bluetooth speaker scene with this stylish 15W effort. Connectivity includes Bluetooth 4.0, using the apt-X codec for improved sound, and NFC for easy setup. It also incorporates an FM radio and works as a speakerphone,
too. The battery offers up to ten hours of playback, while the nylon cover, available in a range of colours, doubles as a stand, which is, ahem, novel.

3. September 2013: Bose QuietComfort 20

Bose’s first in-ear headphones to offer noise-cancelling tech use dual mics in each lug to detect and counter outside sounds, insulating you in a cocoon of your own tunes. However, press a button on the slightly bulky control unit and said mics can also allow you to hear what’s going on around you, via the miracle of “Aware mode”. This lets mid to high frequencies through so you can hear station announcements and the like. The battery provides up to 16 hours of noise cancellation on a single charge, with a full rejuicing via USB taking two hours.

4. September 2013: Crystal Acoustics Blu DAC

Making sweet, digital love to your hi-fi , this little black box is a Bluetooth receiver and digital-to analogue converter (DAC) that lets you stream tunes from your phone wirelessly. It can be attached to any amplifi er or receiver via analogue or optical digital, and if your device has NFC, you can pair with a touch. Music is streamed using the apt-X Bluetooth codec, bringing any home stereo stack, no matter how valve-based and dusty, firmly into the wireless age.

5. September 2013: Nike Hypervenom Phantom

These new kicks might not gift you the skills of £48m man Neymar, but Nike’s All Conditions Control technology may afford you better ball skills on a sodden British pitch come Sunday afternoon. The outer sole is crafted from a responsive nylon chassis that boosts agility and traction and, according to Nike, the placement of the studs allows for faster penetration (of the pitch), so that’s nice. Oh, and a quicker release, too. Wayne Rooney will be playing in a pair of these this season. Like his syrup, the colour scheme and finish – designed to highlight the parts of the boot best used to score goals – are eye-catching indeed.

6. September 2013: Razer Atrox Arcade Stick

This latest gaming accessory from the US PC gaming beast brings ’80s-style arcade nostalgia into your home, letting you play Street Fighter II Turbo as nature intended. Ten “tournament-grade” fi re buttons are accompanied by an eight-way joystick with authentic, rounded ball top. The top panel can be removed, giving modders and tinkerers access to its internal workings.

7. September 2013: Samsung Galaxy NX

Splicing gadget genes without regard for the consequences, Samsung’s latest experiment is the Galaxy NX, a compact system camera running on Android, with 4G for easy shot-sharing. A 20.3-meg APS-C CMOS sensor with 100-25,600 ISO suggests the possibility of pro-grade shots, and dualchannel Wi-Fi kicks in should 4G or 3G be lacking. There’s also Bluetooth for more local sharing. Essentially a camera that thinks it’s a phone, it’s not to be confused with Samsung’s Galaxy Zoom (p24), which is a phone that thinks it’s a camera.

8. September 2013: Sony Smartwatch 2

Pressing on with its wearable-tech revolution, Sony updates the Android-based smartwatch that it released to a chorus of groans last year. Having sold half a million worldwide since, the Smartwatch 2 looks rightly smug, pairs via NFC or Bluetooth 3.0 and lets you read messages, control music and answer calls. The 1.6-inch, 220x176 display is water- and dust-proof, with a “four-day battery life”. We’ll see about that…

9. September 2013: Sony Xperia Z Ultra

The Xperia Z’s phablet-sized relative has a 6.3-inch, full-HD screen and an inherited disregard for the perils of water – it’s encased in waterproof aluminium and glass that lets it dive up to 1.5m. Protected inside sits a 2.2GHz quadcore processor and there’s an eight-meg camera on the rear. It may be big, but at just 212g it won’t sink like a stone. And at just 6.6mm thick it’s competing with Huawei’s Ascend P6 (p30) for the title of world’s slimmest smartphone, too.

10. September 2013: Toshiba Excite Write

There’s one company very happy about the resurrection of the stylus, post- Galaxy Note, and that’s Wacom. Already selling pressure-sensitive digital pokers for Android and iOS, it’s now providing the one that comes built into Toshiba’s 10.1-inch, Android Jelly Bean-packin’ Excite Write. Scrawl notes on its 2560x1600 IPS display and clever software deciphers your script into neat digital text. Other stuff: 1.9GHz Tegra 4 processor, 2GB RAM, microSD slot, Gorilla Glass 2 screen protection, a choice of 16GB or 32GB, 3G or 4G variants, and a keyboard dock.

7 WAYS TO GROW OUT YOUR BANGS GRACEFULLY

You've hit that awkward in-between stage. But don't touch the scissors. "You'll only be more frustrated in the end," said hairstylist John Barrett. Instead, he recommended "being patient and knowing you still have many options." Here, he shares his tips for how to manage and style your hair until you hit your perfect length.

TRIM, BUT DON’T CHOP

The secret to growing out bangs successfully may surprise you: Schedule regular trims. But didn't we just tell you to step away from the scissors? While completely chopping off regrowth only causes you to cycle through more bang remorse, regular bang trims actually help your fringe grow longer more quickly. "Trimming promotes healthy hair, and healthier hair is more apt to absorb moisture and vitamins to help it grow," said John Barrett, owner of the John Barrett Salon at Bergdorf Goodman in Manhattan. He suggested booking a bang trim every six weeks, noting, "not only will trimming bangs keep them looking great, but also trims make bangs easily blendable into the rest of your hair."

THINK DEEP AND WEIGHTY

"Keeping your hair moisturized is important; moisture prevents breakage, which is key to successfully growing out bangs," Barrett said. To keep your hair well-hydrated, treat your strands with deep-
conditioning masks. "Deep conditioning should be done about every other week or so [for unprocessed hair], and every week for processed hair," Barrett explained. When styling, choose products with a bit of weight to them, such as a clay, which works to keep those stubborn short hairs from standing at attention when they should be keeping in line.

GET TO THE BEST PART

Now is the time to choose sides. When growing out your bangs, switch from a middle part to one positioned to the left or right, angling it down slightly from the crown of your head, as Emma Stone does here. "An angled part is your best bet when in the growing-out process," Barrett said. "When bangs are positioned at a slight angle, you'll have a better chance of disguising awkward length, as well as keeping them in place with a weighted product."

Disguising the awkward phase of fringe regrowth can be as simple as picking a hairstyle that keeps bangs in check. For shorter, trickier bangs, Barrett suggested parting your hair at an angle; brushing it to the side using a product with weight, such as the styling clay; and then securing the ends with bobby pins, barrettes, or clips, as Diane Kruger does here. "This keeps shorter bangs out of your face," Barrett said. Bonus: With today's hair accessories, you can even find options that are anything but basic.

HANG OUT WITH THE BAND

Sometimes, you simply want your bangs off your forehead altogether. No problem! "Thin headbands are timeless and perfect accessories when growing out bangs," Barrett said. "I see women of every age on the streets with elastic, bohemian-inspired, or chic jeweled headbands." The best part about the versatile accessory? No matter your fringe length, you can pop one on to push your bangs up, back, and away, just like Rachel McAdams—and no one will be the wiser to your hair transition.

DO THE TWIST

Add this tuck-and-roll technique to your hairstyle repertoire; it serves to mask any awkward fringe regrowth seamlessly. Roll the lengths of your bangs and tuck them along your hairline either tightly or loosely, like AnnaLynne McCord; then secure the roll near your ear using a hairpin or bobby pin.

PERFECT A BRAID

Braiding strands along the hairline, like Carey Mulligan did here, is another option for varying your look as you grow out your bangs, as well as for keeping ends from dangling in your eyes. Just be cautious with a shorter fringe; to keep ends from poking out, dampen hair with gel, like Redken Hardwear 16 Super Strong Gel, prior to braiding and then blast the area with hairspray after you finish your plait. Voilá, convenient and chic!
